George Washington's basic belief or philosophy was that no one should have much power over another. In George Washington by Jeremy Roberts, it reads, "He reaffirmed his commitment to democracy in the strongest possible terms." Jeremy Roberts is talking about how when given the chance to take all of the power for himself after the Revolutionary War, Washington denied it because he had lived his life by the principles of integrity and honesty. He did not believe that one man should have more power than another. Henry Lee described George as "first in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of his countrymen." This quote shows that Washington cared more about his country's welfare more than his own.
