The plan was to imediatly take out Paris, eliminating France from any sort of fight. The Germans however, were held back at Verdun, and could not move as deep into France. They then had to face France to the west, and Russia to the east. A two front war is not a good place to be in.

Strategically , Germany made several mistakes with one of them being that Germany wanted to avoid a two-front war . The Germans fought both the Russians on the Eastern Front and on the Western Front fought against the Americans and English .
Germany also suffered a devastating defeat at the battle of Stalingrad . A battle that marked the furthermost Eastern point of their advance into Russia . The Germans never recovered and eventually the Russians captured the German capitol of Berlin .
The failure of the Germans to capture Moscow was another strategic mistake as well as not defeating England before turning their attention to Russia . Hitler and his generals thought that Russia could be defeated and the Germans could then turn their attention to England .
