As most Kings from any period in History, King Henry VIII wanted to hang onto his throne and go down in history as a successful ruler, however one of the things King Henry is most notorious for is creating the Protestant Branch of the Catholic Faith. The motivation for this was purely selfish, as the Pope would not grant him a divorce from his first wife (Catherine of Aragon) so that he could marry the second (Anne Boleyn). Henry isolated himself from the authority of the Catholic faith, effectively made himself head of the church, and demanded his subjects do the same. This move greatly decreased his popularity among his subjects and plunged the nation into Religious uncertainty for many years to come. King Henry the Eighth also wanted a son to act as his heir, to succeed him on the throne. This ambition cost him the lives of four of his six wives. (Opinions may differ.)
