The Luftwaffe. although that terminology is generic and has no application to the Nazi Era. In WWII it was commanded by Field Marsjall Herman Goering who is much maligned in modern historical as Fat Herman, an oaf, and pompous, even ludicrous in his choice of uniform selection. Goering was, like the Desert Fox, his former leader, the Red Baron, a respected combat leader, an Ace in WWI, and the holder of the Blue Max, Germany's highest award for bravery.

During WW1, the German air force was not called the Luftwaffe. They were simple the German Air Service. They also had a branch in the Navy called the Marine Air Force.
