The Bible does not say this happened, although Jacob continues to be referred to by his original name afterwards. True, there are two separate and quite different stories in which God changes his name from Jacob to Israel, in Genesis chapters 32 and 35, which would only make sense if Jacob's name was once again only Jacob. However this is a doublet that reflects two different traditions written down by two different authors at quite different times, not the intention of God.
He was called 'Israel.'
