He used made up stories - called parables or illustrations- to convey deep spiritual/valuable points to meditate and ponder on, and apply in ones life where necessary in order to serve the Almighty in a better way. It was foretold in the Hebrew scriptures that he would teach this way. Those who took what he said seriously, such as the disciples, would come up to him afterwards and ask him to explain the meaning of these parables and this would be a way of sorting out the serious from those along for the miracles and the selfish benefits. Matthew 13. Still an excellent teaching method today.
