The reason for the birth, life, death and resurrection of Christ was to save all humans from eternal damnation through original sin from Adam and Eve. He spent his last adult years teaching others through word and deed how to live in accordance to God's laws (the 10 commandments), healing and forgiving. And most important to warn sinners that hell was a reality and many would end up there unless they followed him. Undoubtedly He was trying to scare them. The Bible tells us hell is a real place and we have need to fear it.
