The rediscovery of Bach's music began when Felix Mendelssohn worked toward a presentation of the "St. Matthew's Passion" in 1850. Before that his music largely fell out of favor due to changing tastes in style. Also, Bach wrote for necessary occasions demanded of him by his musical posts -- for example, composing cantatas for the needs of his congregation, pieces for the court he was employed in.
The first year in the list of Bach's compositions is 1700.
