Sorry, nobody did relate that fact. However, the last piece in the Goldberg Variations consists a folk tune on the words "Kraut und Rüben / Haben mich vertrieben / Hätt' mein' Mutter Fleisch gekocht, / Wär' ich noch geblieben" ("Cabbage and beets / drove me off / If my mother would have cooked meat / I would have stayed").

Apple pie because he always worked late through dinner and the only thing left was apple pie. Also, being away from his mother, it made him feel at home and gave him inspiration.
