Whereas Mark's Gospel portrays Jesus as adopted by God at the moment of his baptism, and Matthew and Luke portray him as the Son of God from the moment of his conception, John depicts Jesus as existing from before the time of creation.

The synoptic gospels depict Jesus as fearing death (cf Luke 22:44), although resolute in the face of death, but John's Gospel portrays him as triumphant in the knowledge that his mission is finished (John 17:4, 19:30).
