Laura shaved one year from her age in "Little Town on the Prairie", and in the book says that she got her first teaching job a couple of months before her sixteenth birthday. Her teaching certificate, as reproduced in the book, shows the date of Dec. 24, 1882. Her real teaching certificate is shown in the the book "Laura's Album" by William Anderson, and it is actually dated December 10th, 1883. Laura was 16 - almost 17 - when she got her first teaching job.
