Laura was 5'1" tall. She was tiny but strong. By her own description she was as "dumpy as a French horse." She longed to be tall and willowy, but that was not to be. Like her father she had blue eyes, but she said "they did not sparkle like Pa's." She was not beautiful; she was fairly average but pleasant-looking. She had small hands and feet.

Laura's hair was light brown and very thick but fine. If fell below her knees, but as was the style in her time, she kept it braided and piled on the top of her head. In adulthood she had it cut shorter but still wore it in a bun.

It was customary during most of her long life not to smile for the camera, but in snapshots taken of her and Almanzo in their later years, she had a big, wide grin.
