Mao's attempt to organize small farms into large collectives was part of his Great Leap Forward campaign in the 1950s. The aim was to rapidly industrialize China and increase agricultural productivity through communal farming. However, the forced collectivization resulted in widespread disruption, loss of individual property rights, and a decline in agricultural productivity, leading to a man-made famine that caused millions of deaths.
