The only reliably historical New Testament reference is in Philemon 1:24. The reference tells us nothing about Mark, except that he was a Christian who appears to have been known to Philemon and other Christians associated with Philemon. As a result, an extra-biblical tradition arose, that Mark was in Rome as secretary to the apostle Peter and wrote down Peter's memoirs, which supposedly became the source for Mark's Gospel.
