Motte and Bailey castles were not very good. They had a moat around the outside. A large, dirt mound were the duke/king and his famly lived, and a paddock at the bottem, where all the slaves and peasants lived. The wallls were easily burned down by invaders, and the keep on the dirt mound, often sunk into the ground, crumbling and leaving the King/dukes family to ceratain death. Not all motte and bailey castles had moats, some just had a ditch with no water in.

Ok. get lots of men (an army is handy) to dig up soil and pile it in a heap. This is your motte. When it's about fifty feet wide and a hundred across, build a tower on top. Then build a wall round the bottom, at a distance of about 20 yards from the mound. You can do the building in wood or stone as you prefer, and the outer wall can even be of earth. The space inside the wall is the Bailey. The tower on the top is the Keep. Life in the Motte and Bailey Castles depended on your wealth and power. The Lord of the Castle lived in the most protected part of the castle, and soldiers lived within the Bailey. Servants would be expected to provide food for the Nobles and soldiers but didn't have as good life as soldiers. Other occupants were the Blacksmiths although they were not that important they did have a better life than servants. Life was a pyramid shape with the quality of life getting lower according to the position of the inhabitant.
