His first idea was the Opera Hans of Iceland, based on Hans d'Islande by Victor Hugo; this was in 1856. Nothing ever came of it. His first opera that he worked significantly on was the unfinished Oedipus in Athens, based on the tragedy of the same name by Vladislav Ozerov; he worked on it from 1858 to 1860, but never finished. His first and only completed opera, Boris Godunov, was based on the drama of the same name by Alexander Pushkin. The original version was written from 1868 to 1869, with a second revision being worked on from 1871 to 1872. He also made minor changes to the opera in 1873.

These are all in addition to the above. In 1863 he began Salammbô, losing interest and abandoning it in 1866. In 1868 he set the first 11 scenes of Gogol's The Marriage (Zhenitba), which he also abandoned. He then wrote Boris Godunov, as told above.
In 1874 he began Khovanshchina. He was having personal problems at that time, starting and stopping projects. He also started The Fair at Sorochyntski in the same year. Both were left incomplete at his death. Khovanshchina was nearly complete and was finished by Rimsky-Korsakov. It has received numerous performances around the world and is still mounted occasionally.
