The god of the sea and one of the Olympians, son of Cronus and Rhea. he is said to have been more powerful then Zeus his brother whom is considered the sovereign ruler and assumed eldest son.

* He presided over the sea. He could command the waves, provoke storms, create landslides on the coast with a flourish of his trident and cause springs to flow. His power also extended over spring and lakes.

Sacrifices of horses to the sea were common and used to ensure a safe journey on travel and trading across sea as he was also God of Horses.

* He controlled Earthquakes. They were seen as his doing and portrayed as a sign of displeasure.

* Seen as the God of horse in ancient Greek mythology, which was seen as another job of great importance. Horses in ancient Greece meant wealth, status and power and without the good graces of Poseidon a Greek citizen was left walking on foot which meant that he or she was a peasant if they lived in the country.

* influence was in governing the mental health of the Greeks of ancient times. Any and all mental shortcomings or dysfunctions were attributed to Poseidon and his displeasure with either the person suffering the disorder or his or her parents if it was a child that was afflicted.
