What was Roald Dahl like?

In some ways, Roald Dahl had quite a sad childhood as his sister, Astri, died of appendicitis. Weeks later, his father died of pneumonia.

Also, Roald was sent to boarding schools, which was also an unpleasant experience. He was often caned, and he was subject to bullying by older boys. These sorts of experiences influenced his writing, and can be seen in books like Matilda and Danny the Champion of the World.

However, he was a bit of a prankster and enjoyed practical jokes. His fondness for a particular candy shop formed the basis for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and was also the cause of a severe caning when he and his friends dropped a mouse into the lolly jar. He had a protective but fair mother, who pulled him out of school when she found out he was caned.

Roald Dahl also enjoyed family holidays in isolated seaside places, after his mother remarried. His stepfather was a positive influence in his life.
