Robert Hooke discovered and named cells. The first cells he saw were dead cork cells. He called them cells because they reminded him of the small, closely packed rooms monks sleep in. He shared some of his observations in a book titled Micrographia. Hooke is known as the father of microscopy.
Robert Hooke did not receive any major awards during his lifetime. He is best known for his contributions to the field of science, particularly in the areas of biology and physics.

The major scientists who made contributions to the discovery of cells are Robert Hooke, Theodor Schwann, Matthias Schleiden, Rudolf Virchow, and Antonie van Leeuwenhoek. Hooke coined the term "cell," Schwann and Schleiden proposed the cell theory, Virchow added the concept of cells arising from pre-existing cells, and Leeuwenhoek used microscopes to observe cells for the first time.
