What was Saint Matthews family like?

All we really know about Matthew the disciple of Jesus is that he was a tax-collector or publican. The Bible provides no other information and any later texts would be pure conjecture. We can say that Matthew must have been an educated, middle class Jew who spoke Aramaic.

The Gospel According to St Matthew was written in Greek, sometime during the years 80-100, by an anonymous author who based his information about the life of Jesus on the Gospel According to St Mark, as well as drawing on a sayings document we call the Q document. This Gospel was not attributed to St Matthew until some decades after it was written. We know nothing about the author we know as 'Matthew', but he clearly was not the disciple Matthew.
