I have read that, on a special Irish pagan holiday, there was a great bonfire lit on the top of a sacred hill. No other fire was to be lit before that fire was lit by the Druids. That evening, St. Patrick lit a huge fire on top of another sacred hill before the other one. The king was in his hall feasting, and saw the fire. The Druids wanted him to go and take his army and kill St. Patrick and his followers, but the queen persuaded him not to. Instead he invited St. Patrick to the castle and the druid put poison in the cup St. Patrick was to drink from. But when he was offered the cup, St. Patrick refused it, saying, "The Lord God has told me this. The cup the druid now holds is like the druid himself. Outside he looks right, but inside he is full of poison, like the wine has poison in it." The king was astonished and after questioning the druid, banished him and all his kind. Then the king made St. Patrick a counseler of the court and eventually the king became a Christian himself.

Patrick converted much of the country to Christianity from paganism.
According to Tradition, St Patrick not only helped to heal and nurture the poor/disadvantaged, but he is also the reason so many Irish people today are catholic. Through his prayers and enthusiastic sermons, a lot of people were converted.
He allegedly banned snakes from the island.

Though post-glacial Ireland never actually had snakes; one suggestion is that snakes referred to the serpent symbolism of the Druids of that time and place.

Legend also credits Patrick with teaching the Irish about the concept of the Trinity by showing people the shamrock, a 3-leaved clover, using it to highlight the Christian belief of 'three divine persons in the one God'

His first visit to Ireland was involuntary, he was taken there as a slave after being abducted from Britain. He was forced to work as a slave and work as a shepherd for 6 year. After he escaped he eventually became a priest and was sent back to Ireland as a bishop by Pope Celestine I. In Ireland, he spread Christianity. He used the shamrock with it's three parts to symbolize three Gods as one: The Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit.
