She was the second born of eight children. Her father was an abolitionist, stern but open-minded. She was raised in the Quaker religion. Her father did not allow toys and games saying they distracted from the "Inner Light." Susan learned to read and write by the age of 3. She was home schooled for elementary and high school. her father believed that his children should be educated, that's why he added an extra room to his house. later her father lost his jobs and soon had to sell their house. in the new place susan started teaching little kids. Her parents were Quakers and her father was a cotton manufacturer. Until she was 17 she had a decent life. Her father lost everything in the panic of 1837. She had to leave school and work to pay off her father's debts.
