It has been called Walt Disney World since it opened in 1971. During the design phase, it was referred to as Disney World and The Florida Project.
It is located in Central Florida, in the incorporated cities of Lake Buena Vista and Bay Lake, in southwestern Orange County, and a portion of unincorporated northwest Osceola County. The resort was founded with the opening of the Magic Kingdom theme park in 1971, and now features three other theme parks, Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios (which was originally called Disney-MGM Studios) and Disney's Animal Kingdom. Disney World also features two water parks, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach, the Downtown Disney shopping. and nightlife district, six golf courses, an amateur sports facilities complex, and 22 resort hotels, lodges and time-share properties.
