It's not clear that anyone expected Shakespeare to have any particular kind of job. He did have to have some method of putting meat on the table, since he had a wife and children. However, it did not matter how he did this. His brother Gilbert was a haberdasher and his brother Edmund was an actor; it seems that the Shakespeare boys were not expected to follow any particular career.
