There is no reason to think that he was obsessed with anything. He liked making money and he wanted to improve his social status, and had some success with both. He appears to have been very proud that a coat of arms was granted to him, allowing him to call himself William Shakespeare, Gent. However, if he had been obsessed with these issues, he wouldn't have had the time to observe the world and people around him, and to reflect on the human state, as he clearly did.
