ZANU PF is the name of the governing political party in Zimbabwe, of which Robert Mugabe is leader. It is a right wing nationalistic party that favours restrictions on free speech, suppression of freedom of the media, and tends towards totalitarianism. It is also violently anti-British and anti-American, due mainly to Zimbabwe's colonial past when it was known as Rhodesia.

Who is the opposition leader in Zimbabwe?

Based upon the allocation of Parliamentary seats, following the March 29, 2008, election, ZANU-PF is now the opposition party and its leader, Robert Gabriel Mugabe, the Opposition Leader. However, inasmuch as the Zimbabwean Parliament does not choose the head of government (the Zimbabwe voters do) the answer is less clear. While the MDC's Morgan Tsvangerai out-polled ZANU-PF's Mugabe on March 29, 2008, a controversial run-off (which the MDC chose to boycott) resulted in Mugabe's election as President. Mugabe, as the head of government and Head of State, can now claim to rule Zimbabwe (by decree, if necessary) putting Tsvangerai into the position of opposition leader.

In 1980 Zimbabwe gained independence from Great Britain. Since then the Zimbabwe African National Union and ndash Patriotic Front led by Robert Mugabe has been the only political party in Zimbabwe.?

Zimbabwe gained independence from Great Britain in 1980, marking the end of colonial rule. The Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF), led by Robert Mugabe, became the dominant political party following independence. Mugabe's leadership was characterized by a mix of nationalistic policies and increasing authoritarianism, leading to political turmoil and economic challenges in the country. Over the years, ZANU-PF maintained control through a combination of electoral manipulation and repression of opposition.
