a roman punishment was a punishment given to you for behaving badly

eg if you murdered someone you would get put into a colosseum to fight to the death with other murderers or with the lions, you could get a large fine for not having the correct weight of bread as being sold at, whipped for various other crimes.

However if someone stole something from you like your clothes when in the public baths they would not get punished, it would be your responsibility and would have to get them back or buy some more
