This is an impossible question to answer because it covers a 1000 years of history. Knights were nobles so anyone who was a noble would most likely also be a knight. This was a very expensive thing to be. The cost of a suit of armour amounts to the cost of a 5 bedroom house today. The horses they rode were also specially trained for battle and not a horse for just riding.

In English, a knight was a knight, in French he was chevalier, and in German he were called ritter. A knight would have the title, Sir.

There was no "chief" knight. Each knight was a noble so they were equal to each other.
