A common farm in early Rome was more like an allotment. The Roman state gave its citizens only small plots. The rest of the land belonged to the state and was public land (ager publicus). The rich, however, appropriated much of the public land and accumulated large landed estates. Over time, the small peasants found it difficult to make a sufficient living on their small farms.
