A cotter would eat a lot of bread. If he grew vegetables, he might have those -- beans or peas, maybe turnips or rutabagas. Remember there was no corn or tomatoes, because those weren't discovered yet. It was rare for a poor person like a cotter to have meat -- much of the game was protected for the rich landowners to hunt.
