A rifleman was a soldier with a rifle. During WW1 any soldier who was issued a bolt action rifle was considered a rifleman. Other models of rifles are out there (WW2 ex. M1 Carbine, M1 Garand just to name some off the top of my head that I know the name of.) The way to determine a rifle is that it is operatable by a single person, and uses a larger "round" than other firearms. Nowadays there are machine guns and rifles, and assault rifles that can all use the same bullets. The way to tell the difference is that Rifles don't use "belts," but can use large magazines (ussually in the shape of a drum.) To keep it simple a soldier that uses a gun that fires rifle rounds without a high powered scope, and doesn't use a belt feeding system.
