Nimitz was not there, commanding from Pearl Harbor instead, but as C-in-C of the Central Pacific Theater of Operations he did choose to fight the battle at Midway with the only three US carriers left available, taking a huge risk that they might be destroyed, but it proved to be the turning point of the war in the Pacific.
