The US undertook 3 major actions during the war:

  1. Resupply of Israel to replace their material losses after the war started.
  2. Mediating exchanges between the Israelis, the Egyptians, and the USSR during an early ceasefire
  3. Helping to arrange the ceasefire to end the war.

With respect to the resupply, it is possible that it helped lessen the risk of Israel going to nuclear weapons. It certainly gave them more freedom to expend their existing military resources since they knew they were getting replacements for much of them.

By mediating exchanges between the different sides and the USSR, the US helped lessen the likelihood of further US and USSR involvement in the war. The USSR had threatened unilateral action if the US didn't work with them to impose a ceasefire.

The final ceasefire was greatly facilitated by the shuttle diplomacy of US Secretary of State Kissinger.

In addition to these actions, continuing US support of Israel helped precipitate the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo which led to the 1973 Energy Crisis.
