a war approved by the higher authorities of a religion against another religion or members of a sect of the same religion. Some sort of reward usually in the "after life" was guaranteed to those who took part.

The Moslems call it a Jihad.

The Crusades were holy wars called for by the Pope against the moslems in the Holy Land.

Those who went on crusade were guaranteed a fast track to Heaven when they died.
