Early roman religion involved the belief that everything (including objects) had a spirit known as numina.
There was then a strong Greek influence on Roman religion - and anthropomorphic deities were introduced. The Roman Juno and Minerva identified with the Greek Hera and Athena; Jupiter with Zeus; Mars with Ares.
The Sibylline oracles also had a huge influence - they were collected in books and kept in the temple of Jupiter. They were consulted in times of war, disaster, plague, etc.
There was also a strong belief that the will of the gods was revealed by omens such as thunder.
