Anteros is one of several gods of love. He is the brother of Eros, who was the god of lust/desire. Anteros, the god of mutual affection, allows love to exist past the initial moments of carnal interest, so that a relationship can be built and sustained over time. Anteros punished those who were cruel in love, and those who used love to hurt or manipulate others.
