The format and play of Baseball evolved significantly during the 1800s. In the early part of the century, America, England, and Germany had games that would be recognizable as precursors to baseball or cricket, often with extremely informal rules and play.
American baseball became more formalized in 1845 when one of the many amateur teams in New York compiled the "Knickerbocker Rules;" the Knickerbockers and 15 other teams formed the first official league in 1857. At the time, different regions still had slightly different rules; a more unified set of rules arose from the fact that the Civil War meant people from different states were playing together.
Professional baseball arose a little later, with the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players breaking off from the pre-war National Association of Base Ball Players in 1871. Further associations rose and fell, with two remaining today: the National League (1876) and the American League (1902).
