Arthur did some school teaching while he studied law. After he was admitted to the bar, he practiced law in New York City and became active in the Republican party. In 1871, President Grant appointed him Collector of the Port of New York. In 1877 after Hayes became president , he was forced out of his job as Collector and went back t0 his law practice until he was elected Vice-President.
