The Copperheads was a large group of anti-war, anti-Lincoln Democrats that wanted to secure peace with the Confederacy. Their main point of historical influence is in the 1864 presidential election. The Democratic party, nominating George B. McClellan, the old Civil War general, wanted to put a quick stop to the war, giving the CSA its independence. As it happened, Atlanta fell to Sherman, Grant pushed Lee back to Petersburg, and Lincoln's re-election was secured as the public was now sure of an American victory in the war. The Copperheads pretty much fell apart.
