Temples are not homes of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. They are places where hindus can worship them. The home of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are their respective heavens, such as Mount Kailas for Shiva, Vaikuntha for Vishnu, Brahmaloka for Brahma.
Hindu people usually go to temple to worship their Gods. Most of the Hindus have a small temple at home.
We believe god exists in all of creation and worship God in many forms (gods). These forms are often displayed in temples, but are also kept within the home. Since Hindu's believe god is everywhere as well as within us all, worship can occur anywhere and not necessarily in a temple or place of pilgrimage.
