The hygiene in the trenches was the worst you could imagine, trench foot was a common problem. There were no toilets in them so a bucket was used and they didn't wash their hands after taking a poo! The smell was terrible but after a while people got used to it!

Incredibly uncomfortable, you had to use a bucket for the lavatory and then not be able to wash your hands afterwards. Sometimes you had to go days without cleaning yourself which could lead to illnesses. You also did not have the choice to change your clothes alot, trench foot was a common cause of one wearing the same socks for a while.

Health and diseases in the trenches during World War I was a major concern. Men killed in battle were often buried close to the surface and would reappear in time. Rat infestations occurred, leading to the rats feeding on live soldiers as they slept. Lice and influenza were major problems for those living in the trenches.
