The thing that was important to Sparta's culture was that they, unlike any other Greek city-state, was constantly at war. The city owned any child from the moment of birth. They would examine the child and determine if it were weak or strong. If it were weak and unhealthy it was left to die. They took children from the age 6 or 7 to train in the military.
