Chinese Immigrants
It is estimated that around 20,000 Chinese immigrants arrived in California between 1849 and 1852. This was in response to the California Gold Rush, as many Chinese immigrants sought opportunities in mining and other industries in California during this period.
Prior to 1870, the primary occupations were mining & building the railroad. Late 1800s to the early 1900s, the Chinese built "most" of the levees that control the rivers in the Sacramento regions of California.

Depends on which immigrants, and where they were. In some cases, they did not speak the same language as the mine owners. The mines may have been an unsafe place to work. Pay was small, and in many cases, the immigrant had to buy EVERYTHING from the mining company- food, housing, and mining tools and supplies. And the mining companies set the prices for those things.
American employers desperately needed laborers for agriculture, mining, and railroad work. Mexican immigrants helped to fill this need.
