Cold, dirty, unsanitary and above all. Loud. Grenades would drop in without warning sending men scrambling for cover. Artillery shells lambasted the trenches deafening the soldiers. I suggest watching "Passchendaele". Its a love story, but at the end it shows a pretty good representation of trench warfare.
It was very miserable. The trenches often flooded causing muddy floors. They were often infested with rats. The air smelled like decay and smoke. Diseases spread rapidly as well as lice. Many soldiers got a condition called trench foot, an infection on the souls of the feet, caused by the water on the bottom. There was also the risk of artillery fire, small arms fire, poison gas, and other enemy attacks to deal with. all around the trenches were not a pleasant place to be.
Being in the trenches of World War I would have been a truly harrowing experience. The threat of death was constant in the trenches, and disease and vermin were rampant.
soilders were extremly tired in the trenches if they wernt fighting they would be in the medical or sleeping.
