"White people" in the 30's would be a very different breed that what people would think of as 'White' today. In 2011, most people of Irish Catholic decent would consider themselves white , this was not the case during the early 1900's. Are Italians 'White'? What about Greeks, Turks, Jews? A 'white' person in the 30's could have fallen into any number of economic categories. All the jobs that Americans won't do, like being a maid or a migrant worker, well white Americans used to do those jobs. The average white person during the depression did the same thing as the average person did, anything to survive.
