Calvin's chief religious message was that humans could not save themselves from eternal damnation because they were imperfect as a result of original sin. Instead only God, who embodied perfection, could allow humans to be saved through his grace. This belief is known as predestination because God chooses who shall be saved and there is nothing a human himself can do to alter this according to Calvin's beliefs.
