In fact by only having 400 soldiers, de Courcy defeated the local Irish. The fantastic weapons and armour of the Normans helped them to win victories even when they were outnumbered. John de Courcy took over the most of Down and Antrim and built castles there. He built Carrickfergus Castle by making Carrickfergus his head quarters and built his strongest castle. De Courcy realised how important it was to get the local Irish on his side to rule. He used Religion to do this. At Downpatrick, the headquarters of MacDunlevy had been a hill and is now called the Hill of Down. De Courcy built a new castle there and rebuilt the cathedral the nearest hill. The cathedral is named after St. Patrick. In 1185 de Courcy claimed that the bodies of St. Patrick, St. Columba and St. Brigid had been found there. This made Downpatrick an important Religious site. He made coins with the face of St. Patrick on one side and his face on the other side. Since kings where only meant to have their heads on coins made the king angry. To strengthen himself further he married the daughter of Guthred, King of the Isle of Man. She was called Affreca.
