The Bible doesn't say what his occupation is. It is very likely he didn't have one because his description in The Bible suggests that he was a nazirite. This was the name given to a Jew set aside for a particular purpose - to do God's work. Nazirites wore animal skins (as did John) and did not cut their hair (John didn't either) and ate simple food (John ate locusts and wild honey). The other famous Nazirite worth a mention was Samson, the man of great strength who lost it after his hair was cut by Delilah's servant. In losing his hair he also lost his strength - by being a broken man because of his breaking the vows needed for the calling of a nazirite.
