He explored the Canadian coastline looking for the Northwest passage in 1497. He landed on Labrador or Cape Breton Island.Jacques Cartier explored the Saint Lawrence River in 1534. He made three trips and claimed the area for France.Henry Hudson found Hudson Bay in 1610. He sailed at that time for the English but an earlier trip was sailed for the Dutch. He died on that trip when his men abandoned him to return home.
