This kind of thing depends on the rank of the soldier, but normally conditions were bad and rations were even worse, men only got a tiny amount of space and a single bunk to call his own. Above all that was the conditions of the fighting, it was a terrible place for a war, the Vietnamese had all the advantages, they knew the terrain, and on their own ground they outclassed the Americans, the Americans were victims of numerous ambushes and suprise attacks which eventually warranted their retreat.

The nation (country) of Vietnam didn't exist during the Vietnam War. Nor was any nation called "Vietnam" fighting the US. There was a country called North Vietnam that defeated the Republic of South Vietnam in 1975. The US was allied to the RVN (Republic of South Vietnam).
Since the mid 90's, Vietnam is a regular (Communist) country doing regular business with regular countries, including the US.
The US objective was to bolster the government of South Vietnam and keep it from being taken over by North Vietnam. The US spent much money and human life trying to achieve this goal, but in 1975 South Vietnam collapsed under a North Vietnamese invasion.
